Internal Communication is a Noble Pursuit

internal communication is a noble pursuit happy employees with thumbs up

What we do as internal communication professionals is a noble pursuit. Day in and day out, we not only help organizations achieve their business objectives, but we also help enrich the lives of employees in meaningful ways.

By articulating the organizational vision and clarifying expectations, we help employees to have more rewarding careers. We communicate procedures that make the workplace a safer place to be. By clearly communicating employee benefits offerings, we help employees make better choices that enhance their lives and the lives of their loved ones. We help employees understand and assimilate change, and thus reduce uncertainty and anxiety. By communicating with compassion and as a source of accurate information during times of trouble, we give employees optimism and direction. We make employees aware of resources that are available to help them. In these and countless other ways, we are engaged in an honorable profession that helps organizations and the people who work for them.

Effective internal communication is a powerful force. Do good. Be proud.

The few. The proud. The ICs.

It is hard to argue with the sentiment here--that, in the aggregate, our profession's conscientious members tick all of the boxes you mention. But I think, at our best, we go further than this. At our best, in developing messages and agendas with the added fluency, vision and strategic acumen we bring to our organisations, we influence the organisational trajectory itself. Instead of just communicating about outcomes, we help create and deliver them. That transcends "nobility" and brings us into "significance".
